Care Guide

Spot-clean beaded bags and plush Batik Buddies, hand-wash batik home textiles in cold water, dry everything in the shade and iron on the reverse: that is the short version of caring for batik.

How should I care for a beaded batik bag?

Beadwork and printed batik cotton prefer a light touch.

  • Spot-clean only. Dab marks gently with a soft cloth dampened with cool water. Never soak or machine wash a beaded bag.
  • Dry naturally. Let it air dry away from direct sun and heat.
  • Store it stuffed. Fill the bag with tissue paper to hold its shape and keep it in a dust bag or breathable cotton pouch.
  • Mind the beads. Avoid rubbing against rough surfaces or catching beads on zips and jewellery.
  • Protect the colour. Long hours of strong sunlight can fade batik, so store bags out of the sun.

Shop the bags and charms.

How do I clean a Batik Buddy?

Our plush Batik Buddies are best surface-cleaned. Wipe gently with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, wipe again with clean water, and let the Buddy air dry completely before it goes back on the shelf. Avoid the washing machine and the tumble dryer, which can flatten the stuffing and strain the stitching.

How do I care for batik pouches and wallets?

Treat fabric pouches, wallets and pencil cases like a beaded bag: spot-clean with a damp cloth, let them air dry, and empty them from time to time so zips and clasps are not strained. Beaded pouches should never be soaked.

Can I wash batik home textiles?

Yes. The aprons, oven mittens, coasters and placemats in our home and living collection are made to be used and washed.

  • Wash cold and separately. Hand-wash, or use a gentle cold machine cycle, with a mild detergent. Batik dyes can bleed in the first few washes, so keep pieces away from light-coloured laundry.
  • No bleach. Bleach and strong detergents strip colour.
  • Dry in the shade. Line-dry out of direct sun to keep colours vivid. Reshape coasters and placemats while damp and dry them flat.
  • Iron on the reverse. Use a low to medium setting on the wrong side of the fabric.
  • Keep oven mittens dry. Never use damp mittens: moisture conducts heat.

How do I remove a stain from batik?

Act quickly and gently. Blot — never rub — with a clean, damp cloth, working from the outside of the mark inwards. Avoid stain removers that contain bleach, which can lift batik dye and leave a pale patch, and test any product on a hidden area first. On beaded pieces, clean only around the beads and let the area dry fully.

How do I travel with a beaded bag?

Pack it stuffed with tissue inside its dust bag, near the top of your luggage where it will not be crushed, and keep it away from liquids and toiletries.

How should I store batik in a humid climate?

Singapore’s humidity is hard on every textile. Store batik clean and completely dry, in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic, somewhere cool and out of direct sun. A little airflow goes a long way.

Questions

Frequently asked

All FAQs
Can I put a beaded batik bag in the washing machine?

No. Machine washing or soaking can loosen beadwork and distort the bag. Spot-clean it with a soft, damp cloth and let it air dry.

Will batik colours run in the wash?

Batik dyes can bleed in the first few washes, so wash home textiles separately in cold water with a mild detergent and dry them in the shade.

How do I iron batik?

Iron on the reverse of the fabric on a low to medium heat setting. Never iron over beadwork.

How do I store a beaded bag?

Stuff it with tissue paper to keep its shape and store it in a breathable dust bag, away from direct sun and humidity. See the care guide for every type of piece.
